George Sterling

George Sterling (1869–1926) was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, but moved to California in the 1890s, where he remained until his death. He gained local celebrity by such poetry volumes as The Testimony of the Suns (1903), A Wine of Wizardry (1909), The House of Orchids (1911), and Sails and Mirage (1921); his Selected Poems appeared in 1923. He became the informal “king of Bohemia” and was close friends with such figures as Jack London, Clark Ashton Smith, Theodore Dreiser, and H. L. Mencken. His Complete Poetry, including his verse dramas, appeared in 3 volumes in 2012. As far as is known, this is his very first publication in Australia.
